Part A: Investigate 1. What will your service project attempt to help: My service project will help dogs and owners get along better and have a better understanding of one another. 2. What can you discover about this issue: a. Interview with member of community: I interviewed the Canyon Lake POA Community Services Director. She said this will help create a better dog park. I also interviewed the President of the Bark Park Committee. She stated that this information will be helpful to dog owners, especially those walking within the community on a leash. b. Research national statistics: It is estimated that there are 70-80million dogs in the USA. There are organizations such as the ASPCA and the National Dog Park Association which helps dogs and dog owners. These groups help create a safe environment for dogs. c. Find and review news articles, fact sheets, or reports to share: http://www.aspca.org/animal-homelessness/shelter-intake-and-surrender/pet-statistics, https://www.avma.org/KB/Resources/Statistics/Pages/Market-research-statistics-US-pet-ownership.aspx; https://www.tpl.org/media-room/dog-parks-lead-growth-us-city-parks#sm.00158mnajsr8fkq105y1wt41kevc8; http://www.canyonlakepoa.com/dog-park-project Part B: Plan What is the goal of your service project: My goal is to assist dogs and owners to get along better and have a better understanding of one another. Planning & Preparation: What will is take to plan your project: I planned out my project by calling the POA and asking if this idea was needed and she confirmed that they did. I did online research to confirm the project. I will need a poster sized information sheet (completed on MS Publisher), yellow ribbon cut into 18inch lengths and a ziplock bag. Implementing the Service Activity: Where and how will you put your idea into action: I will implement my idea at the Canyon Lake Dog Park. I will first create a poster and laminate it. I will then use a ziptie to tie it to the fence along with a plastic bag with the yellow ribbons inside. Reflection: What do you want your idea to accomplish: I want my idea to create a safer dog park for dogs and owners. My flier will tell dog owners that if a dog has problems such as sickness or anxiety to attach the yellow ribbon to that dogs leash. This will say to others to give these dogs space or stay away from yellow ribbon dogs. Demonstration: How will you tell others what you have done: I will talk with the Bark Park Council and get permission. Everyone will see and I will also present my idea in a POA Board Meeting and I can also write a letter to the Friday Flyer Newspaper describing what I am doing.
